🏏 Financial Assistance for Kids in Sports – Saskatchewan

 

    We believe every child deserves the chance to play — regardless of family income.  

    Below are programs that provide financial support for children and youth participating in sport and recreation activities across Saskatchewan.

 

💰 Available Funding Programs   

  • KidSport Saskatchewan – Grants to cover registration fees for eligible children.
  • Active Families Benefit (Government of Saskatchewan) – A refundable tax credit to help families recover sport and recreation costs.
  • Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities – National funding that helps with sport registration, equipment, and other participation costs.

1️⃣ KidSport Saskatchewan


What it is:

  KidSport is a province-wide charitable program that helps remove financial barriers by covering sport registration fees for children and youth from low-income families.

Who can apply:

  • Families facing financial hardship.
  • Children and youth typically ages 5–18.
  • Must be registering for a recognized amateur sport program in Saskatchewan.

What the funding covers:

  • Registration fees for approved sports.
  • Note: Equipment, travel, tournaments, or camps are not usually covered.

How much support is available:

  Up to $500–$750 per child per year, depending on your local KidSport chapter.

  2. Complete the online or PDF application form.
  3. Provide proof of income (e.g., Notice of Assessment or pay stub).
  4. Apply before the sport season begins — applications are accepted year-round.

2️⃣ Active Families Benefit (Government of Saskatchewan)

What it is:

  A refundable tax benefit that helps families recover costs for children’s sport, recreation, and cultural activities.

Who can apply:

  • Saskatchewan families with children under 18 years old at year-end.
  • Household adjusted income up to $60,000 (increasing to $120,000 in 2025).

What it covers:

  • Registration and instruction fees for eligible sport, recreation, and cultural programs.
  • Can include activities offered through local clubs, municipalities, and recreation boards.

How much you can claim:

  Up to $150 per child ($200 for a child with a disability).

  Starting 2025, benefit increases to $300 per child ($400 with disability).


How to apply:

  1. Register your child for an eligible sport or recreation program and keep the receipt.
  2. Claim the amount when filing your Saskatchewan income tax return.

3️⃣ Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities 

What it is:

  Canadian Tire Jumpstart is a national charitable program that helps children from financially-barriered families access organized sport and recreation by covering registration fees, and in some cases equipment and transportation.

Who can apply:

  • Children roughly aged 4-18, from families facing financial barriers.
  • Families residing in Saskatchewan whose child is registering in a recognized sport or recreation program.

What the funding covers:

  • Registration fees for eligible program(s).
  • Equipment and/or transportation may be eligible—depending on local Jumpstart chapter guidelines.

How to apply:

  1. Visit the Jumpstart website: https://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/pages/individual-child-grants
  2. Identify the local Jumpstart chapter in your area (Saskatchewan) and complete the application form.
  3. Provide proof of income / financial need, and program registration details (club name, cost, etc.).
  4. Submit the application by the local chapter’s deadline (typically open January 15 – November 1).
